Located within the Dr Pitt Allotments in Bedlington,
this large, accessible allotment garden has been
specifically designed for use by elderly and disabled people
as well as children of school age.
The allotment includes raised beds, block paving and a
large poly tunnel which provides shelter as well as an
indoor work area for use on rainy days.
All of this makes access easier for a wheelchair user in
order to navigate their way around the garden. The allotment
gives its users the ability to continue with their gardening
hobbies in a safe and accessible environment. It offers a
social setting where individuals with joint interests can
chat and “work together”. Vegetable products are nurtured
and grown by the users which are then distributed amongst
them.
The allotment also educates and informs its users of the
processes involved with vegetation, floral displays and
photosynthesis.
This project provides volunteer opportunities for
individuals looking to enhance their CV as well as providing
a current reference for employers.
